Sorry the photos of the week were a little late this week. I'd say with the picks below, they were well worth the wait. Don't forget to nominate your favorites this week!
Congratulations to Linda! She completed her 365 Project this week. I've enjoyed following her project very much. Her project set is filled with interesting architectural details, great perspectives and fabulous colors. Her macro shots are wonderful and I enjoy seeing her creative interpertations for the Macro Monday group's weekly themes. She has a knack for creating photos of everyday items and her stream has a great deal of variety. Her photostream is filled with lovely images and well worth a visit. Here she describes the experience of her project in her own words:
There are several people in our area who do photo walks together. One of these people mentioned she was starting a 365 project. I thought what a great way to learn more about photography. She completed her 365 in August - shutterbugCel. Be sure to check out her stream. When I started this project I made a point of always having my camera with me. There has only been a time or two that I forgot the camera and I missed a great shot.
Congratulations to Linda again! Although she completed this project she made the impressive decision to begin another 365 Project for 2010. We wish her best of luck and will enjoy continuing to see a daily photo in her stream! Below are some of her favorite photos from her completed project (many are the ones I found especially memorable,) and her 365th photo Here is a link to a slideshow of her work.
For a lot of you, it's one month into your project. Please drop by the group to leave your thoughts so far. You can view most of January's photos of the week in this gallery. If your photo is missing it's because you've opted out of galleries on Flickr.
Some consider flare a flaw, but if used right it can be a beautiful thing. One of my favorite things, actually! Here are a few photos that use flare in an awesome way.
Another tough choice this week but below are the Photos of the Week for the 17th - 23rd. Be sure to stop by the 365 Community discussions to nominate your favorites for next week.
This week's theme in the 365 Community is Spices & Herbs and I wanted to feature some of the awesome photos I have seen. The themes in the community are a great thing when you are short on photo ideas!
Congratulations to Dani! She completed her 365 Project this week, and it has been a pleasure to follow her project during this past year. Dani's stream is a fantastic place to visit and explore, filled with vibrant color and beautiful details. I've also visited her blog several times throughout the year, she's a wonderful writer and her blog posts about her experience with her 365 are very entertaining and insightful. She wrote a post about the end of her project, it was great to read and see some of her favorite photos again.
When I think about Dani's stream I admire the variety and the impressive photography skills she has gained. She has taken beautiful portraits of strangers, both candid and posed. She has rigged stunning long exposure motion shots with toys and taken lovely flower macros. Her children were subjects in many of her memorable photos, and she has a knack of capturing natural, sweet (and sometimes funny) childhood moments. She used photoshop and TtV to create impressive shots. Dani also became interested in taking photos of hands and feet during her project, and included many lovely shots of them in her project. These are two of my favorites:
Congratulations to Dani again on the completion of her wonderful project! Below are four of her favorite photos from her project, her final shot and a slideshow of her entire project.
Yay.. Congrats to Emily! She finished up her 365 on January 5th, but since she had been traveling over the holiday break.. she just uploaded her final pic this past week.
Living in San Francisco, Emily is another member of the community I had the pleasure of meeting this year. So fun to meet other flickr/ photo addicts :) And for me a visit to her stream was always a treat.... and I have to say.. always made me very hungry! Oh my.. from gourmet dishes prepared by her husband Steve, to visits to all sorts of fabulous restaurants, not to mention all those tasty looking treats. Here are just a few...
And still not sure how she managed it, but all her shots look so light & airy! Even when they were shot indoors under low lighting conditions. A trick with the processing she hinted, while we were out on a photo walk :)
She also had no problem snapping photos inside of stores.. so we got a peak at some of the seasonal displays in town. She had a good eye for spotting cute pups & cool street scenes when out and about. These two are some of my favs :)
During her project we also got a sneak peak into what she does for a living. Some great shots from the performances she helped coordinate. And we traveled with her to the wine country for her wedding anniversary and the East Coast for some holiday fun with friends and family. We meet her neighbors and their pets too.
And will she continue with another 365.. no.. but she will find some other projects soon.
Below we have featured her final shot, a couple of her favs and a slideshow of her entire project. Have a look, but be sure not to go on an empty stomach! Congrats again Emily.
Congratulations to Mykl! He completed his 365 Project on December 31. Mykl's a good friend of mine, we met in college a couple of decades ago. I've always admired his creativity and it has been a pleasure to see it in play during his 365 project. His project is very him, full of humor and interesting things to say, and I've enjoyed following it this past year.
Mykl's photos have a great deal of color and vibrancy. He frequently uses unexpected, off kilter angles that give his photography an added sense of fun and interest. He excels at macros, creating beautiful shots out of all sorts of subjects, no matter how lovely or lowly: flower bits, cracks in the sidewalk and discarded tires all become creatively composed shots. His stream is also chronicles and celebrates signs, textures and big things. His set is an exuberant, beautiful place to explore and certainly worth a visit.
Here are three of Mykl's favorite photos from his project, and, in his own words, why they are meaningful to him:
60/365 Frank One of those moments I wouldn't have captured before I started the project. Knowing I still hadn't gotten a good shot for the day, I started wandering the gallery and happened to turn around as my family was examining Chuck Close's painting "Frank" (at the Minneapolis Institute of Art).
69/365 Plastisaurus Rex One of the many shots I staged for the project. Drawing on the 365 Community's weekly themes and Monthly Scavenger Hunt group for inspiration helped me though innumerable blocks during the project.
360/365 Snowflakes As the project progressed I started to become more hyper-aware of my surroundings. This is a perfect example of something I would have walked right by pre-project. Taken just as the snow was falling, it was one of those times I just knew the shot would be special. I developed something of a sixth sense for knowing when I had each day's shot by the end of the project.
Congratulations again to Mykl! Below are his final photo, four admin favorites and the slideshow of his entire project.
It never gets any easier to choose the Photos of the Week because there are always so many beautiful photos in the pool! But below are the photos that were chosen. And be sure to nominate your favorites for next week!
Congratulations to Mari, another 365 Community member who finished her project December 31! Mari's project set is wonderful, full of lovely portraits and wonderful self portraits. She uses film beautifully. So many of her photos seem like moments in a story, filled with energy and mystery and has a great way of making mundane things seem interesting. I enjoyed exploring her project set very much, here is a link to the slideshow of her project.
Mari gained a great deal from her project and describes her experience beautifully:
if wasn't for the group i would have stopped counting my days a long time ago. i did not make 365 photos to flickr, but i thought of photography everyday, certainly. and i love the project for that. and for making me feel beautiful in front of the camera sometimes. and for making me pay attention to the simple things, the details, the textures. for making me realize that photography, to me, is attachment. and that being able to see the light and how it behaves in the most different conditions is what keeps me going with life.
Congratulations again to Mari! Below are three of her favorite photos from the project, her final photo and two admin favorites.
Whilst Heather has been spotting teacups, I've been seeing a lot of splash photos in the pool. Here's just a sampling, but you can see plenty more liquid fun in the group pool.
I've recently noticed a few really beautiful shots involving tea and tea cups in the group pool that I wanted to share. I'm a coffee lover, but tea will always hold a special place in my heart. ;)
Congratulations to Aaron for finishing his 365 Project on December 31st! His project started out as a New Year's Resolution to sharpen his skills and soon grew from there. Aaron's photostream is a mix of everyday life, stunning portraits, and beautiful black and whites that should not be missed.
Aaron posted some great musings about the 365 Project on his last photo that I am going to share below...in his own words. First of all it is hard work. Trying to be creative when you don't really give a damn is near impossible for me. Trying to be creative and hold down a full time unrelated job is challenging to say the least. Those that do this 365 thing well are my inspiration (see my contacts - ya'll rock!). On the up side, I tended to be much more interested in photography when I was outside or on holidays, the photo's seemed to flow more naturally and the shots were easier and more fun. Although notably, June, July and August were my lowest frame count months. Go figure?
Second, my knowledge of my camera and equipment grew exponentially. I understand much more about it's capabilities and limitations. My skills with off camera flash improved. Nikon's CLS (creative lighting system = remote flash) finally made sense to me. My studio skills improved to the point of needing minimal Photoshop-ing (a blessing). My skill with Photoshop itself also improved but more importantly I grew into Lightroom and consider it my main editing tool.
Third, I learned that my goal should be to wear out my equipment - or at least wear out the camera body. The aim being to wear it out before it's obsolete. I think my camera is rated for 100,000 actuations or something like that - I still have a LOOONG way to go to wear it out and it is arguably obsolete already.
And last, the camera you have with you is the camera you will use. If it's bulky and a pain to pack you won't bring it. And when you bring out that big camera it will attract big attention (sometimes unwanted). Small point and shoots definitely have a place in my heart. However, if you want some great shots in low light, nothing beats a fast lens and an SLR (my 50mm f1.8 is cheap and awesome). By far the majority of shooting was with the D200 and if you want it you'll have to pry it from cold dead hands : )
Below are Aaron's final shot, three of his favorites, two admin picks, and a slide show of his entire 365 Project. Congratulations again, Aaron!
Congratulations to Jim, another member of the 365 Community who completed his project on December 31! Jim and I have not met but we don't too live far away from each other, a fact that often astounds me when I see his photos: so many of them have an otherworldly quality that is simultaneously stunning and exotic. It certainly doesn't seem possible that the moody, fantastical worlds he has created could exist a mere hour's drive away from my house.
Jim has a marvelous way of photographing objects and turning them into gorgeous abstract macros. He takes incredible nature shots, revealing beautiful details that are barely recognizable as plant bits, and epically proportioned insects that inhabit fascinating microcosms. His Project 365 Collection is inspiring and well worth a visit, as is the rest of his stream.
Jim has the distinction of being the 365 Community member who has submitted the most photos in the pool, an accomplishment which is not surprising since he has already completed two overlapping projects since he joined. He is continuing with a third project during 2010 and I look forward to watching another year's worth of his artistic photography. Below are three of his favorite photos from his project, his final photo, and three admin faves.
Woo hoo.. Congrats to Ryan. He finished up his project just other day on January 5th! Yay. Our first official 2010 finisher :)!
He decided to end his project exactly just the way he started...
And since he wrote some wonderful thoughts on his final photo, I thought I would share a bit of it here, (for the whole thing you can check out his final photo!)... "when i first started this project with the very vague goal of taking one "good" photo a day for a year, i really had no idea what to expect - out of myself, or flickr for that matter (more on that last part in a bit). my main objective was to just use my camera every day really, and at first my thought was that i would simply document an event from my day...a little slice of my daily life. i quickly learned that it was going to become more of a creative outlet, which was just fine with me.
along the way i learned that no matter how horrible i thought one of my photos was, tomorrow was another day. i also learned that no matter how much i liked one of my photos...tomorrow was another day as well, hah. i learned that given free reign to create my own shots, i really like to tell as much of a story with one frame as i possibly can. by including myself in a lot of my shots, i inadvertently learned to frame, set up, and expose all my shots better before i shoot because it's a pain in the ass running back and forth all the time, hah.
to anyone thinking of starting a 365 project i say go for it. here's the secret...the whole thing is only as difficult as the pressure you put on yourself. i mean the views, the comments, and hey even the quality of shots only matter as much as you want to make them matter. there's nothing wrong with a snapshot of the day. snapshots fill up photo albums. snapshots hang on walls. so why not fill up yours with pictures from your next year. all you really need is a camera and the spirit to interact w/ others."
Now to describe Ryan's stream? Wow.. Many things to come to mind...these are just some of them... rundown buildings, found garbage, the goldmine, hdr, witty, humorous, yet sometimes a little on the creepy side, long exposures, landscapes, street scenes, selfies, ghosting, cloning, his "close/nearly/almost" series, his pup, his lovely wife Jen, her tummy and of course the intro to the newest member of their family ... the fonz (I mean Felix). Yay. Congrats to you all.
Below we have featured one of my all time favs in Ryan's stream (one of his top picks too), 3 more of his favs, and a slideshow to his entire project. Be sure to have a peak. It really is a treat and lots of inspiration to be found! Congrats again Ryan.
Phew, what a lot of nominations this week. This week's Photos of the Week go to NakedEye Photography's Coca-Cola splash, Pascal \o/'s portrait of the lovely pregnant Jessica and manhonyweb's beautifully toned dunescape. Be sure to nominate yoru favourite photos each week.
Congratulations to Anna! Woo hoo. Have to add that Anna is the one of the San Francisco local photographers that I actually have met from the group. What fun we had on our flickr meet up... thanks for coordinating Anna! Was a treat to meet everyone.
Here is her final photo and some thoughts in her own words about her project.
"Day 365: What’d you expect? Another bottle of wine? Champagne? Fireworks? A finished Rubik’s cube? Nope, you get me "exposed" and standing in front of my trash bin garage while passer bys stare at the yahoo with the camera on a tripod (plus I just wanted to show off my new favorite T from Zazzle.com)
Wasn’t it just yesterday that I placed my Rubik’s cube on my coffee table and fired away or was that really 365 days ago? Despite my moaning and groaning about wanting this project to end, my regrets total ZERO. I’ve done something everyday that I actually wanted to do: capture an image and share it with you. Project 365 has taught me that I really do love photography, eating and drinking (52 food/drink related photos this year, go figure). In the latter part of 365 I’ve slowly fallen in love with black & white photography and developed a small crush on f/1.4."
Having another look through Anna's project this evening, I was reminded how she really has a great eye for bold & vibrant colors.
As she mentioned, she grew to really enjoy b&w photography. Here is just a small sampling...
And I don't think this blog post would be complete without mentioning her gorgeous shots of wine and other tasty drinks.
So what’s next? She will definitely keep shooting, but won’t commit to another 365 just yet. She is planning a 52 week project with one light so she can finally learn off camera flash. So again congrats to Anna!
Below we have featured her three of her favs and a slideshow to her entire project.
Congratulations to Sergio, another member of the 365 Community who completed his project on December 31! His project set is well worth a visit, his photos are visually appealing and compositionally strong. His year of photos is filled with color and creativity.
When asked if he would like to add anything to this blog post, Sergio wrote, "I would just like to express my gratitude for the support from the people of the group. It really helps in hard moments. I've had many (big) delays in uploading and without that support I would have probably abandoned in the middle."
Congratulations, again, to Sergio on completing his project and creating many wonderful photos along the way! Below are three of Sergio's favorite photos from the year, his final photo, two admin favorites and a slideshow of his entire project.
Below is my favourite submission for the past week's theme of primary colours. eahNC has managed to include all three colours in this playground shot. You can see the other photos and add your own here.
